Day 26: Half of the Way

Fifty percent of the race has elapsed, and eight men and women are expected to hang on and eventually finish. Two others are in the ballpark to reach the goal. The rest get the experiences of being there and hoping to reach a new or formidable goal. No one is a loser in this race. Having said all that, Sarvagata Ukrainskyi rang up 71.34 miles to lead the group.Sarah Barnett continues a solid, almost uncatchable effort for the ladies. Teekshanam Dodonu is impressing everyone with his consistent, gentle and productive running. William Sichel, 60, is trying to get back into the fray with his third successive 62.5 miles or better. He has more than a day to make up in mileage. All the runners are grateful for the tremendous support so far. “Hope is Nectar”- Sri Chinmoy.

Day 25:Six On The Other Side

Nine runners made it past 60 miles, on a day with a little less sun and wind. The total athletes past the halfway point bulged to six today led by Vasu Duzhiy, Stutisheel Lebedyev-in a personal best, and first woman Sarah Barnett. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi continues to lead by over 80 miles with a good day of 66.95. He is still averaging over 70+ miles per day. And the final runner to slide past the 1000 mile mark was Ray Krolewicz, the ‘Lanterne Rouge’ of the event, as he is going further than he has ever been with every step. We are due for a few days of lower temps- time to get those laps in.

Day 24: Weather or Not-Part Deux

This was no World Cup slaughter. This was painstaking reality on a hot, sticky day in a tough city that only sleeps once in a while. These runners were testing themselves, in an inconceivably tough incubator of endless laps- without fanfare, without incident. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi, the fearless leader of the group, reached 70.79 miles as the mercury peaked at 92ºF, with 62% humidity(THI-101).Yuri Trostenyuk reached halfway today, while completing 64.75 sweat-drenched miles. Pranjal Milovnik slipped by the halfway point as well, on a routine 65.3 mile day. Vasu Duzhiy moved up to fourth place with 64.75 miles. Sarah Barnett held up the distaff side of the ledger with 60.36 miles.Eight people made it past 60 miles. The consistency of the top eight or nine athletes is mind-boggling. Their heat acclimatization is good.

Day 23:Hot Summer

Six runners made it past 60 miles, the least amount since the race began. Temperatures hit 90º+, with the humidity poking around 40%- all a summer mix in New York City, destined to drive people to air-conditioning or to the beach. Yet Team Ukraine put up big numbers, with Sarvagata Ukrainskyi reaching 71.69 miles and Yuri Trostenyuk 69.14. Sarvagata was the first runner to reach the halfway point- 1550 miles- in 22 days+01:54:14. Yuri and Pranjal Milovnik should clip that mark on Tuesday. Nine runners are still on pace to finish, with two on the bubble. More hot weather on Tuesday and a little less hot on Wednesday. Stay cool, folks.

Day 22:

It was warmer, the sun was higher in the sky, the clouds were nowhere to be seen. Yet nine runners made it past 60 miles. Better yet, 10 runners are still on pace to reach the goal. Yuri Trostenyuk and Stutisheel Lebedyev have been relentless in their approach this year, and have shown steady brilliance throughout the contest. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi has been the best of all, for today he fashioned a 74 mile day, and needs only 13 laps tomorrow(Monday)to reach halfway. He is averaging over 70 miles a day. The lesser experienced runners are also learning well. Teekshanam Dodonu has been doing well the last week and has remained on pace to finish. William Sichel has picked it up the last three days and has made it past 2000 km, the furthest milestone he has ever reached. Even Ray Krolewicz is going farther with each step, and living to tell about it.

Day 21: Third Week Along

Eight of the fourteen runners in the 3100 mile race made it past 60 miles today, led by the indomitable Sarvagata Ukrainskyi with 68.6 miles. The three-time finisher has posted a third week total of 491.72 miles. He is averaging 69.95 miles per day(112.59 km) to lead all runners. Second placer Yuri Trostenyuk has averaged 66.7 miles to remain in second place. Sarah Barnett continues to lead the women with an average of 62.53 miles per day(100.64 km). She is sixth overall. The top ten are all on pace to finish, including all three women. Four and a half more weeks to go- who knows what might happen. Stay tuned.

Day 20: The Winds of Change

With Hurricane Arthur in their rearview mirror, the fourteen runners carried on. Wind and rain gave way to clear skies, heavy gusts and lower humidity. Perfect for running. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi led yet another day with 72.4 miles amid bombs bursting and firecrackers reporting in the distance. Vasu Duzhiy climbed back into fifth place with a 68.6 mile day. Yuri Trostenyuk, Stutisheel Lebedyev – resplendent in a stars and stripes running outfit, and Pranjal Milovnik all reached 66.95 miles. Even William Sichel caught the running bug with a fine 63+ mile day. The top ten are still on pace to finish.

Day 19: Wild Winds

A very humid, hot summer day in New York was dominated by talk about a storm passing the area with high winds and heavy rain. Hurricane Arthur was expected to head towards Nova Scotia and mostly bypass our area. The winds and rain did not stop anyone from competing in the race, even though the elements are not at full force yet. Least affected was Sarvagata Ukrainskyi, who went past 1300 miles with another 70+ mile day. In all, nine runners crossed the 60 mile per day barrier. Sarah Barnett still leads the women and has a firm grip on fifth place overall. Happy Fourth of July everyone!!!

Day 18:Elements and Efforts

The group of 14 runners withstood tough conditions throughout the day. Temperatures touched into the 90ºs; humidity levels were stiffling, and a powerful thunderstorm walloped our neighborhood for a few hours. Still, seven managed over 60 miles, with Sarvagata Ukrainsky taking day honors yet again. Sixty-year old William Sichel reached 1000 miles (17 days+12:15:24). But the performance of the day belonged to Ray Krolewicz. The 59 year-old from Pontiac,South Carolina,USA ran from early morning right to the ending bell, garnering 62.56 miles, his best day since Day 1. More stories to follow.

Day 17:July Appears

On another sunny, hot, more humid day, the top seven runners went past 60 miles. Stutisheel Lebedyev ran his best distance of the race so far-69.14 miles- but was upstaged by countryman Sarvagata Ukrainskyi, who garnered 73.5, to bring his race-leading average up to 70 miles a day. Second placer Yuri Trostenyuk, another Ukrainian, had a strange evening. Only minutes after having a haircut right next to the counting desk, Yuri had a local dentist attend to his ailing tooth- and he still ran 66.95 miles. Five more runners slipped past the 1000 mile mark and all 14 are still moving along.
