Day 21: Beat the Heat
With half the field getting over 60 miles and Aussie Grahak Cunningham lighting up 76.28 miles on his card the inimitable eleven
ran on, impervious to heat wave 3. Grahak will reach halfway (1550 miles) Sunday afternoon some time, so his prognosis for a fast time three weeks down the road looks good. Grahak has only four days below seventy miles for the entire race. Top tier stuff. The 95 to 98º day did not stop the runners, nor the late evening thunderstorm that moved in and drenched the remaining late night competitors. After a last gasp hot day the coming storms tomorrow will bring relief and cooler temps to the area. More later.
Day 20: Heat Wave III-The Sequel
New York summers do not forget to be hot and humid. Today was hot and a little less humid as our intrepid runners circumnavigated their playground de Jour. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi resumed running a solid outing with 75.18 miles to lead the pack of eleven. Not the usual suspect Ananda-Lahari Zuscin emerged from his cocoon to notch 70.24 miles, his best total in nearly three years. Sarvagata improved from 643 miles for the first ten days to 717 miles for the second.
Day 19:Heat Wave III-Grahak Excells
On a sizzling hot day with none too much the breezes, Grahak Cunningham had his best day since Day 1 with 77.92 miles. The rest of the field scaled back as high nineties and medium humidity affected most mortals. Only three other men were valiant enough to top 60 miles. Grahak has now run over seventy miles 12 out of the last thirteen days. He is averaging 71.60 miles per day(115.23 km) for the 19 days completed. The current heat wave has three more days before some relief arrives. Hello tropics.
Day 17: When the Going Gets Tough
Day 17 saw the continued gentle skirmish at the top with two men in complete control of their fitness. Leader Grahak Cunningham had an excellent day with 72.99 miles and a relatively early exit for home(11:05 pm). About an hour before was when Sarvagata Ukrainskyi shifted gears and began running 6 minute or under laps to reach 73.54 miles just before the digits on the clock read midnight. He has run eight straight days of seventy miles or more. Pranjal Milovnik, the seven-time finisher from Slovakia ran 65.3 miles after two days with shin splints and big blisters. And Czech Republican Atmavir Spacil is doing well in the heat and topped 67 miles. In all, seven men passed 60 miles as sultry weather moved into the area for the next few days. The race is surely heating up, warm weather or not.
Day 16:And More
As the bad weather is in the rearview mirror, our intrepid runners carried on, fighting little aches and pains or the tide of shinsplints . Sarvagata Ukrainskyi led the day with 70.24 miles and moved into second place overall. Four men went past the 1000 mile mark: Pranjal Milovnik-1000miles = 15 days+01:15:47; Vasu Duzhiy-1000miles= 15 days+09:54:48;Atmavir Spacil-1000 miles= 15 days+14:44:57;Stutisheel Lebedyev-1000 miles=15 days+ 16:10:13.
Day 15: Moving Past Barriers
Pushkar Mullauer went past the 1000 mile split in 14 days+16:10:31 while running 63.66 miles during the heat wave today. He was followed by Sarvagata Ukrasinskyi who passed the unseen barrier in 14 days+16:27:06. Overall race leader Grahak Cunningham ran 70.24 miles for his ninth straight day over 70 miles. As the temps lower a bit for a few days the runners can regroup or think about their remaining journey.Three more should pass 1000 miles tomorrow.
Day 14: The First Big Step
Grahak Cunningham reached 1000 miles first (13 days+16:39:22); and has a 60 mile lead on second place after his eighth straight day at over 70 miles per day. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi lead for the day with 71.344 miles. Pushkar Mullauer from Switzerland reached seventy miles again for the third time this week.
Day 13:Hot One.20
So the day started off tropically with a thunderstorm and scattered showers. So the sun came out later and baked everything with her intense 97º rays. So there happened to be a race happening with 12 tired runners rarin’ to go. Grahak Cunningham dispelled any doubts about his abilities with another superb 75.7 mile day. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi fashioned another 70.2 mile day. Pranjal Milovnik is only one lap behind third place with a fine 68.05 mile day. The runners only limit seems to be their perception of how far or how fast they can go. Another hot one awaits before showers and a lower temp or two. Destiny awaits too. We shall see.
Day 12: Heat Wave II Versus the Tremendous Three
It got a little more hot and humid today on the concrete colossus as the competition heated up as well. When the dust and shoe rubber had settled three went over 70 miles for the day and nine made at least sixty miles. Grahak Cunningham maintained his nice lead of at least fifty miles over everyone with 73.53 on his card, which was equaled by Sarvagata Ukrainsky, the defending champ. Pushkar Mullauer reached 70.24 miles, and Pranjal Milovnik and Stutisheel Lebedyev followed with 68.6 and 67.5 miles respectively. Mr. Ukrainskyi has been fun to watch the last five days as his fitness increases and his laps get faster. After an early evening break today he hammered out nearly 20 laps at just over 6:00 minutes each with a trio under six. We will see about the next two days of Heat Wave II, the Sequel. Stay tuned.
